Jorge Díaz, Agustín Martínez and Antonio Mercero are the three Spanish writers who have authored their books under the pseudonym Carmen Mola since 2017,
although their mysterious identity was not discovered until several years later, when they won the 2021 Planeta Prize with ‘La Bestia, beginning a project of novels about the 19th century, in which Cuba, a key piece in Spanish history, feature prominently.
Carmen Mola knows that people like to look at terror from the comfort of their armchair and in her latest novel she returns one more time to the exploration of violence, this time in colonial Cuba in a plot that portrays slavery, a theme about which Spain has always wanted to "look the other way," she states.
