Javier Solana wins the Espasa Prize with an essay about the changes in the world since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The jury emphasizes that it is a “fundamental work for understanding recent history.”

Javier Solana won the Espasa 2023 Prize for his essay ‘Testigo de un tiempo incierto.’ From the fall of the wall to the invasion of Ukraine, in which he reviews the evolution of the world in the last three decades. The jury, chaired by Pedro García Barreno and composed of Nativel Preciado, Leopoldo Abadía, Emilio del Río and Pilar Cortés—representing the publisher—has unanimously voted for this work, which is considered “fundamental for understanding the decisive events of recent history seen by an exceptional protagonist.”

According to the winner, it is a “very personal” book and the author “is confident that he has been able to convey the magnitude and speed of the changes that we have experienced, as Europeans and globally, in the last three decades, since the fall of the Berlin Wall until the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022″
