The García Márquez, in the heart of the Sant Martí district in Barcelona, is already the Best Public Library in the world in 2023.
The spectacular architectural structure, which evokes a gigantic stack of books, and its open-concept, bright, comfortable and sustainable conception of Nordic design in light wood and glass, were deserving of the prize granted this Monday by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), which has issued its verdict in Rotterdam (Holland), within the framework of the 88th World Congress of Libraries and Information.
With this prize awarded with $5,000 dollars, the García Márquez thus becomes the first Spanish public library to win the IFLA award. The work of the architects Elena Orte and Guillermo Sevillano, from SUMA Arquitectura, which was inaugurated in May 2022, has prevailed over the other three finalists: the Public Library Janez Vajkard Valvasor Krškov (Slovenia), the City of Parramatta Library (Australia) and Shanghai Library East (China).
