Although many children begin to read from the age of five, the first readers category is usually applied to children from six or seven years old, an age at which the vast majority are already capable of reading fluently, independently, a story with a certain plot.
It is precisely at this stage, which lasts until approximately nine years old, in which the love for books is established and will be decisive for the rest of their lives as readers. It is an age group in which the vast majority read voluntarily, driven by an endless curiosity and desire to learn.
This is also included in the industry reports, such as the one published each year by the Federation of Publishers Guilds, which includes in the Report on Reading Habits and Book Purchase in Spain for 2021 (latest figures available), that the 83.7% of girls and boys between the ages of 6 and 9 read books voluntarily (which are not textbooks or compulsory reading at school). Children and young adult literature is the sector that has grown the most in sales during the last five years: 54.8%, on average.
