Francisco Ibáñez has passed away at the age of 87 in Barcelona this past Saturday. With a career of more than 65 years and creations such as “Mortadelo y Filemón,” “El botón Sacarino,” “Rompetechos” and many others..
his work is and will always be a benchmark for Spanish cartoons and comics. He was also the last remaining of that group of cartoonists who worked at the legendary Bruguera publishing house and made the 1960s, 1970s and mid-1980s the golden age of what is now called comics.
Those of us who were born and raised then, owe to Ibáñez our first approaches to reading and countless hours of fun. Losing him has left us orphans of an unrepeatable era. This is a review of his work and his characters, both the most famous and the first or the least known. Rest in peace.
