68.4% of the Spanish population over the age of fourteen reads books. Most do it for leisure, in their spare time, so they choose those genres that interest them the most based on their personal tastes and preferences.
And among the genres that Spaniards prefer, there is one that continues to gain popularity: comics and graphic novels. According to the report El mercado del libro en España, by GfK, the sale of comics and graphic novels grew by 10% between 2021 and 2022, reaching 8% of the total.
One of the keys to comics and graphic novels is the use of visual impact to grab the reader's attention, give voice to the characters, and share the experiences of the protagonists. For this reason, this format is often used to construct memory discourse. Titles like “Persepolis” and “Maus” are examples of a subgenre that recovers historical memory and that is also represented in Spain.
