The Network has 33 libraries distributed throughout all the districts of the city.
The board of directors of the Federation of Publishers Guilds of Spain has agreed to award the LIBER 2023 Award in the category of promoting reading in libraries open to the public to the Network of Public Libraries of the Madrid City Council. With this decision, the board wants to highlight the attention they give to publishing news, as well as the different activities they carry out to promote reading.
The history of Madrid's public libraries goes back 150 years. The Madrid City Council agreed, in 1876, to create the first municipal library separate from the existing archive at that time. It was not until a century later that the creation of a network of libraries was planned for the different districts of the city that depended on this Historical Library.
