The Mexican writer David Toscana (Monterrey, 1961) became the winner of the V Mario Vargas Llosa Biennial Novel Prize on May 28th for “El peso de vivir en la tierra,”
according to the verdict of the Dominican writer Soledad Álvarez, president of the jury, who made the announcement during the closing of the biennial in Guadalajara (Mexico).
The Toscana novel reached the final stretch of the competition, along with “Salvo mi corazón, todo está bien,” by Abad Faciolince (Colombia); “Que hacer con estos pedazos,” by Bonnett (Colombia); “Ceniza en la boca,” from Navarro (Mexico); El invencible verano de Liliana,” by Rivera Garza (Mexico), and “Obra maestra,” by Tallón (Spain).
The work obtained the award by majority of the jury "for its formal skill, its vindication of humor and irony, its compassionate look at the human being and its strong dialogue with the best literary tradition," as indicated by the minutes read by Álvarez.
