Juana Borrero was born on a day like today in 1877 in Cuba. She is considered one of the greatest representatives of Hispanic American poetic modernism and she was known as the child prodigy of this movement in her literary version.
She published her poems in several Havana magazines and weeklies, although she only published one book of poems, Rimas, at the beginning of the 20th century. It was a tribute to the work of the romantic poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, very influential at that time. She died very young, just 18 years old, of tuberculosis and in exile.
Today we remember her figure with this selection of poems, including her last one, which she dictated shortly before she died to her sister, the also poet Dulce María Borrero, entitled “Última rima,” and also some sonnets.
