The General Management for Books and Reading Promotion has been renamed as the General Management for Books, Comics and Reading, after the Royal Decree 313/2023 was approved by the Council of Ministers.

The purpose of this action is to make the unique world of comics, which is becoming increasingly important in the Spanish cultural industry, more visible and evident to the public.

Although comics are books, and their reading is promoted as such, the reason for their inclusion in the new denomination is to highlight their singularities and unique characteristics in the world of books in general. The Ministry of Culture and Sports points out that "its creators move in mixed and border developments between literary creation and fine arts, giving rise to a type of book that is radically different from the traditional ones which are composed only of writing."
