Ten new books are published every hour in Spain: are there too many titles published?

Every year close to 90,000 new works come out. Publishers, booksellers, and readers are affected in different ways by this book production, which some consider excessive and others not so much.

The annual supply in Spain... is it too large a figure, or is it reasonable? Why is this number what it is? Or the question that has already become a mantra in the sector: is too much published in Spain?

There were 92,700 titles in 2021 (69.7% on paper and 30.3% on other media), according to the latest data from the Spanish Edition of Books with ISBN Statistics. Although with some differences. Of that number, only 30,000 are of a commercial nature, according to Jesús Badenes, Director of the Editorial Division of Grupo Planeta, one of the two large publishing groups in Spain, along with Penguin Random House.
