At Bologna: Spain’s Publishers Report Growing Children’s Book Exports

GEE reports that Spain’s exports of children’s books increased by 3.4 percent, to €24.2 million in 2021, with Mexico as a primary market.

Top Markets: The States, Mexico, Argentina

As the 60th anniversary Bologna Children’s Book Fair works its way through the week—it runs through Thursday (March 9)—the Federación de Gremios de Editores de España (the Federation of Publishers’ Guilds of Spain, FGEE) reports that its delegation this year numbers more than 30 publishers. Some of that number have their own stands in the huge halls of BolognaFiere, while others are part of the collective stand mounted by the federation itself.

The program reports that in 2021 (with 2022 not yet fully assessed), Spain’s exports of children’s and young readers’ books showed an increase of some 3.4 percent, to €24.2 million (US$25.5 million), with an aggregate sales number of 3.7 million copies. The United States is the top destination for exports from Spanish publishers, with Mexico seen as “the main market” at €8.6 million (US$9.06 million).
