Born in Granada, Spain in 1957, he grew up in Madrid, where he studied at the Law School of the Autonomous University of Madrid.

He participated actively in the anti-Franco student movement during the end of the Dictatorship, from the ranks of the then clandestine Communist Party of Spain. After the legalization of the PCE, his first journalistic work took place precisely in 1978, in the cultural pages of Mundo Obrero, the official newspaper of the Party.
