The Miguel de Cervantes Prize for Literature in the Spanish Language, awarded annually by the Ministry of Culture and Sports is the most prestigious prize for literature in the Spanish language.

On this occasion, and on the occasion of the "International Women's Day" of March 8th, 2023, the National Library of Spain brings together in the same space -the Italian Hall-, the portrait gallery of the award-winning writers throughout the history of the prize.

Awarded for the first time in 1976, at the end of the 1990s the BNE joined the Cervantes Awards by making a portrait or photograph of the winners. The works adorn different study and reading rooms of the historic Paseo de Recoletos headquarters, as a memory and tribute to the winners. The collection is very heterogeneous and diverse, including well-known artists, hyperrealists, abstract artists, with very different aesthetics, and also photographs of all kinds, black and white or color.
