Spanish reading rates increase among adolescents

Minors between the ages of 10 and 14 and between 15 and 18 register the highest percentages of frequent readers of the total population.

The percentage of leisure book readers in their free time continued to grow in 2022 and confirms the consolidation experienced after the significant increase in reading rates experienced during the pandemic. The Barometer of Reading Habits and Book Purchase in Spain 2022, prepared by the Federation of Publishers Guilds of Spain (FGEE), sponsored by CEDRO and in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sports, indicates that the percentage of the Spanish population who read a book during the past year, either for leisure or for work, reached 68.4%. If we refer only to those who read for leisure in their free time, the percentage stood at 64.8%, a figure slightly higher than last year, a figure that increases to 66.2% if we add those people who only read comics in their spare time.

The figures collected in the 2022 Barometer reflect that the increase in reading rates experienced in 2020 because of confinement and mobility restrictions has given way to a consolidation that began last year and reflects a slight increase in 2022.
