On more than one occasion his heart has melted when he has been told that while his readers read his books, their chemotherapy sessions went by faster.
The expectations have been met. When Penguin Random House stole Santiago Posteguillo (56) from Planeta, after putting a million-euro contract on the table, the publisher knew exactly what they were doing. His latest novel, “Roma soy yo,” about the life of Julius Caesar that will continue in future installments, was the best-seller in 2022 in our country with 185,000 copies. As the living author of the most important historical novel in the Spanish language, he has already sold more than 4.5 million copies.
Santiago is the youngest of four children from a middle-class family. His father was the commercial director of a large paper company, and his mother was a teacher. Since they could not leave their children a large inheritance, the siblings were pushed to study and at least earn university degrees. After going through the Pilar School which had a high-level education, Santiago managed to graduate and obtain a European doctorate in English philology at the University of Valencia, while his brothers followed careers in economics, law, and history.
