Ian Gibson wins the 2023 Comillas Award

The work 'Carmen en Granada. Memorias de un Irlandés,' in which the historian recounts some of his childhood memories and how the city captured him, has been chosen by the jury as the winner of the 2023 Comillas Award.

The jury has praised the courage and honesty with which the author has written his memoirs. The prize consists of an advance on royalties of 12,000 euros and a bronze statuette designed by Joaquín Camps.

Born into a Methodist family in a very Catholic Dublin of the 1940s, "the author evokes in his story, often in a blunt manner," as the jury has discussed, "the tensions and frustrations of a home marked by Puritanism, as well as his sentimental education in various boarding schools, where he dealt with colorful characters who over time became relevant in the Anglo-Saxon world. One of these characters is Federico García Lorca, whose tragedy "fascinated" the Hispanic scholar.
