One and a half million students go to a bilingual school in Spain, 96 percent in English. Two out of every ten schools in our country apply bilingual education, which began to be implemented in 2005 and is present above all in primary education.
The bilingual system is called CLIL – Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenidos y Lenguas Extranjeras (Integrated Learning of Contents and Foreign Languages) and covers all students. ‘‘The good thing is that there is no segregation of students. Everyone has the right to learn in English,'' explains Candelaria Ramos, a teacher at IES Teobaldo Power in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
In 2011 there were 3,775 centers within the system. In the past academic year 2020/2021 the figure rose to 7,372.
