The celebration of International Translation Day provides the opportunity to pay tribute to the work of linguistic professionals.
International Translation Day has been officially celebrated on September 30th in Spain since May 24th, 2017, when the General Assembly adopted resolution 71/288 on the role of linguistic professionals in establishing links between nations and the promotion of peace, understanding and development.
Despite this, this day has been celebrated since 1991 at the initiative of the International Federation of Translators (FIT). This entity brings together 100 associations representing more than 80,000 translators from 55 countries and has the mission of promoting professionalism and improving working conditions for people who work in translation. To celebrate this day, the FIT chose September 30th, which not by chance is the saint day of Jerome of Estridon, considered the patron saint of translators, who translated the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin.
