Natomas will have its first bilingual kindergarten: who is eligible to apply for bilingual education

Bilingual education has many benefits, something hundreds of children in the Natomas School District will now have access to. Here we tell you who can apply and how.

NATOMAS.— The Natomas School District will open a new bilingual school, with education in English and Spanish. This is the first kindergarten of its kind for this region in the Sacramento, California area.

The Heredia-Arriaga school would be the first with a program known as dual immersion, or DLI. District spokeswoman, Deidra Powell says this is an opportunity for children to learn a new language while attending to the rest of the curriculum. Construction has already begun on the school, and they hope to be able to open for the 2023-2024 school year. It will be located on Club Center Drive.

Which students are eligible for this bilingual kindergarten?   According to the District, enrollment will only be for students entering Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten, as they will begin the program in early elementary grades (TK/K) and add a grade each year.

Elizabeth Aguirre, who has previous experience in bilingual institutions, will be the principal.
