April is the month of the book. As the days go by, interest grows until the 23rd arrives, the D-Day marked in red on the calendar. The red of the roses that are given with that special book for someone you love.
Mainly in Catalonia on Sant Jordi, with Barcelona as the epicenter, it is such a deep-rooted tradition and such a symbolic gesture that each year it reaches new heights. Not in vain the combination of a book and a rose is considered exquisite.
On April 23rd, specifically, World Book and Copyright Day is commemorated. The reason: on April 23rd, 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. Also on April 23rd, other eminent writers were born —or died— such as Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla or Manuel Mejía Vallejo. For this reason, this relevant date for universal literature was chosen by the UNESCO General Conference in 1995 to pay a worldwide tribute to books and their authors and promote universal access to reading.
