Their Royal Majesties, King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain present the 2021 Cervantes Prize to Cristina Peri Rossi

Cristina Peri Rossi becomes the sixth woman to win the highest award for literature in Spanish and she gives thanks with a feminist, anti-war and pro-freedom speech, inspired by the character of Marcela, from el Quixote.

This morning, the 2021 Cervantes Prize was awarded to the Uruguayan writer Cristina Peri Rossi, in an act presided over by the King and Queen of Spain that took place in the Auditorium of the University of Alcalá.  As we learned a few days ago, the winner has not been able to attend the appointment for health reasons. The 80-year-old writer had already declared last November, when she received the news of her award, that her health was delicate. In her place, her friend, actress Cecilia Roth, attended the ceremony on her behalf.

This ceremony for the highest award for literature in Spanish, has been held again after two years of pandemic and the day has been moved forward since Book Day falls on a Saturday, April 23 this year.
