Spain Writes, America Reads

The Cultural Office in Washington, D.C. presents the literary program Spain Writes, America Reads, an initiative that promotes the translation and spreading of literary works by Spanish writers in the United States with the support of Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and other partners.

The program will be based on three basic lines of action. The first of these will consist in supporting American publishers to promote the translation of Spanish authors, through AC/E aid for the translation and travel expenses of the authors, as well as coordinating with different participants and local counterparts during the authors’ tours through the country by the Cultural Office.

Additionally, support will be given to translators of works by Spanish authors into English through the promotion of the Spain-USA Foundation Translation Prize (SUFTA), an award given annually by the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) that will reward the best translation into English of a work by a Spanish author published in the US during the previous year, being the first edition in 2022. Finally, the Cultural Office will organize a series of tours to promote the internationalization of young Spanish authors in the U.S., taking into account the selections made by initiatives such as «10 de 30: Nueva Narrativa Española»  or “Granta: Los Mejores Narradores Jóvenes en Español,” or the next special issue of Granta on the best narrators in the different languages ??of Spain, in order for their works to be translated into English and published in the United States.
