Restrictions ease, but not the literary podcast business. Podcasts in the children and family category have seen a 20% increase in listener numbers since 2019, according to NPR and Edison Research's 2021 Audiobook/Podcast Report.
Podcast adaptations of successful children's shows are growing, while opposite to that, film and television studios are getting involved earlier than ever in seizing the intellectual property of podcasts aimed at children.
Over the past two months, Spotify has launched a number of exclusive children's shows, including a spinoff of the Moonbug Entertainment TV series hit, CoComelon, aimed at children ages 2-5. GBH Kids, meanwhile, is adapting the PBS cartoon Arthur, whose last episode aired February 21st after 25 years, in a podcast with Gen-Z Media that will include new stories and games for the beloved character.
