Print-on-demand, as its name suggests, refers to book printing that starts when there is a demand for a particular title. That specific feature is precisely what makes it a highly profitable alternative for publishers.
By producing the copy only when there is a demand for the title, both significant initial investments are eliminated, as well as the risk of producing print runs in advance without knowing how much demand there will be for a particular title. Consequently, it reduces the possibility of returns being generated by bookstores and therefore reduces the risk of incurring leftovers.
