Almudena Grandes, Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts

The Spanish Government has honored posthumously Almudena Grandes with the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.

Almudena Grandes, who died last Saturday, was chosen based on the following merits:

• For her extraordinary quality as a writer, endorsed by numerous awards from the beginning of her career, including the National Narrative Prize, awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, in 2018, for her work “Los pacientes del Doctor García.”

• For her contribution to the promotion of reading: the high volume of sales and numerous editions of her books show that she managed, through quality literature, to attract many non-readers to the world of reading, who became fervent followers of her work.

• For her contribution to the internationalization of Spanish literature, she was one of our most international and translated authors. In 1997 she was the first woman to receive the Rossone d'Oro award for all her work, previously given to writers such as Alberto Moravia and Ernesto Sábato, and in 2020 she won the 2020 Jean-Monnet European Literature Award for “Los pacientes del doctor García.”
