Bookstores weather the impact of the pandemic

Madrid, 09/24/2021. On September 16, CEGAL presented the main conclusions of the Library Map 2021. Álvaro Manso, their spokesperson, highlighted the stability and endurance of the small and medium-sized bookstore in the face of the impact of the pandemic.

This research of the bookstores that operate in Spain also highlights the widespread presence of these establishments in the national territory, with an average of 6.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, as well as the long number of years of these businesses: «almost half of these bookstores have been operating for more than four decades." More than 3,200 independent bookstores

In this edition, the Map is made up of 3,208 independent bookstores. Although this data is lower than in previous years (3,500 bookstores), the decrease is not due to a negative balance between the number of openings (45) and closings (41), but to a process of refining the study, in which establishments where the sale of books is not the main purpose of commercial activity, were not included.
