The book flies towards the highest turnover of the last decade in Spain

The greater number of news drives the sector, which could reach an unprecedented 23% increase at the end of the year, according to a study presented on the last day of the Edita Forum.

The book sector got off the ground at the end of last year after the sinkhole of the pandemic lockdown, which caused an 18% drop in the market in the first half. But a year later, the figures are to rub your eyes: the commercial book turnover during the first six months of 2021 shows a spectacular growth of 17.1%, vertiginous and stratospheric compared to the same period of the pre-pandemic 2019 (2.1% ). And the best: "The growth is not the result of the recovery after the covid-19 because what was lost then was practically recovered at the end of last year," insists Iñigo Palao, consultant for the market research and measurement company GfK.

His forecasts are that the consumer book (without the text books, credit and library purchases) will close the year with "a growth of between 17% and 23% and a turnover of 1,100 million euros will be reached" . If it occurs, it would be the highest in the last decade (1.09 billion in 2011), according to GfK studies.
