Planeta expects to have 1,800 audiobooks by the end of 2021, 400 more than a year ago. Roca Editorial asks platforms to pay more to publishers and authors.
The consumption of audiobooks has exploded in Spain. 34% of Spaniards have listened to an audiobook at some time and 5.2% of the Spanish population (about two million people) listen to audiobooks at least once a month, a figure that represents an 80% growth compared to just one year ago. The data was offered yesterday by Juan Baixeras, the head of Audible Spain, Amazon's audiobook platform.
The manager pointed out that users of Audible.es, which was launched six months ago, have already listened to more than three million hours of audio content and the month-to-month growth is 31%. But the unstoppable momentum of the audiobook, which has grown globally 30% per year for 10 years, is the result of the effort being made by the entire industry (publishers, platforms, writers and narrators), as Baixeras and representatives of the publishers Planeta, Roca and Anagrama agreed yesterday.
