Marta Marron, the promoter of Bookshop in Spain, analyzes how to support bookstores in troubled times and how Bookshop wants to bring to Spain what was learned in the United States.
There is no experience comparable to that of walking through a bookstore, hearing recommendations from bookstore workers, discovering new readings or being able to participate in the cultural activities that are programmed at the bookstore. Independent and local bookstores are centers that contribute to the cultural dynamics and social activities of our neighborhoods and communities, and therefore are centers to be preserved and promoted.
In parallel, shopping habits are changing at a significant rate and buying books online for home delivery is a growing alternative. It is because, although reading is still the most frequent cultural habit according to the INE, readers follow different patterns of behavior, in some cases they buy in bookstores, in others in large chains and, also on online platforms.
