The award recognizes the writer from La Coruña for championing culture and copyrights. CEDRO’s board of directors has awarded the writer and academic of the RAE, José María Merino, their 2021 Award. "It is a well-deserved award," says Daniel Fernández, President of CEDRO.
"José María Merino has always valued the important role writers have in society and the need for their work to be respected."
The writer spent his childhood and adolescence in León, a region that has had great influence on his literature and for which he was named Adoptive Son in 2009. With a Law Degree from the Complutense University of Madrid, Merino was given an honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of León and Saint Louis University and was given the Medal of Honor from the Asociación de Licenciados y Doctores Españoles en los Estados Unidos (ALDEEU) (Association of Spanish Lawyers in the United States).
