The book industry - and with it many others - had to be reinvented. Those dates highlighted on the calendar year after year faded as the pandemic progressed. London, Frankfurt, Guadalajara, Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Lima, LIBER, Bologna ... Professional fairs disappeared from the calendar, were postponed for a few months, (how optimistic we were!). Or were reinvented in virtual or hybrid format.
The fairs and events open to the public, meanwhile, were resisting, holding tightly to any thread of hope to avoid closing. Retail book sales has other options, other ways of discovering new works. Purchasing decisions are not based based solely on rational criteria. The need is generated from several places. Yes, it is true that if I read a recommendation from someone whose criteria I trust, I can make my choice, but that is one of the many factors that come into play.
