“Poniente”, (West) from Álber Vázquez, wins the award, “Los Cerros de Úbeda” for the best historical fiction published in 2019.

It has just been annouced that the winner of the “Los Cerros de Úbeda” Award for historical fiction in 2019 was given to “Poniente” (West) from Álber Vázquez.

The jury had a grueling deliberation trying to decide which of the three finalists would take the prize.  The other two being “Mongo Blanco” (White Bean) by Carlos Bardem and “Las Cenizas de Hispania” (The Ashes of Hispania) from José Zoilo.

"Poniente" tells one of the most incredible adventures in the history of mankind: the first circumnavigation of the globe. A unique journey where distances amaze, determination triumphs over limitations and time is no longer relevant when it comes to achieving glory. Told through the voice of a handful of fearless people who sailed into completely unknown territories and discovered the true dimension of the world. Unfairly forgotten, for the first time they speak in the first person. Thus, Juan Sebastián Elcano and his men, on board the Victoria, manage to demonstrate that the raw material from which the heroes of history are built are: commitment, stubbornness and an unstopable desire to always go further.
