For the first time the Instituto Cervantes will present in New York City their report on the state of the Spanish language. In the Tower of Babel of the world there are over 7,000 languages, spoken by 7,300 million people.
In this wide ocean, Spanish is the fourth most powerful language, with English being in first place as “Lingua Franca”, or international language which helps communication between everyone. Just after English is French and Chinese, (which is spoken in the most densely populated country in the planet, almost 1,400 million). This is the list according to the report by El Español 2019, which is published yearly by the Instituto Cervantes, and as a novelty, this year was presented in New York City.
The reason for the unprecedented presentation outside of Spain is because the USA is one of the challenges that the Spanish language will be to overcome in order to keep growing in this country. The forecast for 2060 is that the US will be the second country after Mexico where Spanish is spoken.
