La vorágine is one of the most important and interesting works in Colombian literature, and indeed of Latin American literature as a whole during the first half of the 20th century. The novel’s denunciation of the working conditions of Colombian rubber tappers in the jungle is its starting point but not its final result. La vorágine has served as an inspiration and a reinterpretation for an entire generation of Spanish American novelists.
