We could say that Mendoza starts to configure the genre with this story, written in the code of a crime thriller, about the assassination of the Catalan industrialist Savolta, an arms dealer during World War I . With a magisterial sense of humor and irony, Mendoza presents a corrosive analysis of the economic, political, and social reality of a Barcelona in which a reactionary bourgeousie and a liberal middle class coexist uneasily with a potent worker's and anarchist movement.
