Mario Vargas Llosa offered to head Instituto Cervantes

The Spanish government asked Peruvian Nobel Prized winner Mario Vargas Llosa to head Instituto Cervantes. The proposal has been backed by that country's Foreign Affairs and Culture departments.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Vargas Llosa is "evaluating the offer," presented Sunday by King Juan Carlos, adding that in accepting, the writer would become "an ambassador of the (Spanish) language and culture."
Instituto Cervantes was founded by the Spanish government in 1991 to promote the Spanish language and Spanish and Hispanic-American cultures. It operates in five continents through more than 50 offices.
