Synopsis

Fe Verdejo (whose name means "faith"), a Venezuelan museographer who is carrying out a study in Chicago, finds a document of incalculable value related to black women slaves in Latin America during the XVIII century. Seeking to continue with her research, she travels to Brazil in search of the luxurious dress which was once worn by the famous slave Xica da Silva, in order to be part of the powerful white society of the time. In Xica, Fe discovers a relationship with her own story as a black woman and she develops a deep fascination to find out all the details of her life. Thus, she finds herself in the middle of an amazing journey to the past, not only to discover the fate of this famous Brazilian woman, but also the fate of many slaves who fought for their freedom despite all the difficulties they faced.

Faith in Disguise is a novel about love, but it is also the testimony of many brave women, a manifesto against slavery and, above all, the story of Fe's liberation, when she is finally able to accept the conditions and the legacy of her ancestors. Mayra-Santos-Febres consolidates herself once again as the literary voice which reclaims and calls the world's attention to the racial differences that exist in the Caribbean and the entire world.

A novel about love, a gender testimony, a manifesto against slavery but, above all, a story of personal liberation.
