Sofia, a young anthropologist, has spent much of her life trying to solve the mystery of her mother’s unexplainable illness. Dos inglesas, madre e hija, llegan a la costa de Almería en pleno verano. La hija, Sofia, tiene veinticinco años, es licenciada en antropología y se gana la vida trabajando en una cafetería, pero sobre todo se dedica a cuidar a su madre, Rose, que padece una enfermedad de diagnóstico difuso que le produce dolores. El motivo del viaje es buscar una cura en la clínica del doctor Gómez, un médico que aplica tratamientos heterodoxos y que acaso sea un charlatán. En los ratos libres que le deja su posesiva madre, Sofia conoce a una alemana instalada en la zona y a un apuesto socorrista de la playa.
