This children’s play won the 2004 Lazarillo Prize and may be equally enjoyed by readers and playgoers. The protagonist is Queen Berenguela, an attractive historical character with an aura of legend, who here embodies the need for love and the desire for freedom, and who seems headed for a tragic destiny. An old drifter who takes care of street pigeons is, from his warm and poetical perspective, the person who tells the Berenguela’s story to Paloma, a present-day girl who also suffers discrimination from the other kids.
