This delightful bilingual picture book introduces us to a bicultural little boy who reminds us of the many things in life to be thankful for. “For the sun that wakes me up so I don’t sleep for years and years and grow a long, white beard, thanks” the story begins. As the boy continues to give thanks for the simple daily things in life he introduces us to his family and friends. The reader will meet the uncle, for instance, while he plays the guitar and the family dances and claps. In another scene we meet some of the boy's classmates as they perform in a play. “For my family, who clapped and clapped even when I tripped on the stage in the school play, thanks” he says. This work is presented in beautiful, bright colored illustrations that enhanced the text and give the reader a clear depiction of the diversity of the family and community. The last page “For the cricket hiding when he serenades us to sleep, thanks” the boy tells us as he prepares to go to sleep. Mora’s poetic writing is presented in Spanish and English and conveys a cheerful atmosphere. The author endnote challenges the reader to think about the many things that one can be thankful for. This book will make a great addition to any school or public library. The simple bilingual text makes it a perfect choice to read aloud.
