The greatest and most complex poet of the late Golden Age, Góngora is synonomous with Culteranismo, a poetic school which relates mythological themes brimming with esoteric allusions and violent conceits (Conceptismo). Yet his sonnets, which are dense in imagery and metaphor, are distinguished by grace, charm, wit and vitality, and are much more accesible to modern readers than the lexically, syntactically and figuratively complex Polifemo y Galatea and the Soledades.
