"Corrientes aguas puras, cristalinas…" Thus flows Garcilaso's verse: pure, limpid, crystal clear. A consummate artist, his poems are models of form and beauty. This conscientious regard for perfection may account for his limited output: 38 sonnets, 5 songs, 3 eclogues, 2 elegies, one epistle and 8 coplas. He introduced Italian hendecasyllable verse and the metrical form known as the lira to Spanish verse. Yet this greatest of Spanish Renaissance poets is no mere formalist, and expresses the authentic, sincere sentiment of love with the melancholy and frustrated Platonism of the age.
