"Let from its dream the soul awaken, and reason mark with open eyes, the scene unfolding, How lightly life is taken, How cometh Death in stealthy guise, at last beholding; What swiftness hath the flight of pleasure that, once attained, seems nothing more than respite cold." In 1476, upon his father's death, soldier and poet Jorge Manrique wrote the Coplas, some of the most beatufiul verses ever written in Spanish, in which the idea and image of the passage of time, memory, the sadness which provokes happiness in remembrance will find a resolution diffuclt to surpass.
