Although better known for his picaresque novels, Quevedo is nonetheless one of Spain's greatest poets. By temperament sarcastic, his pungent wit and mordant satire are evident in his verse, although he also wrote great metaphysical and love poems. His poems range from brief epigrams to long heroic poems, from the off-color to the deeply religious. He was an obdurate opponent of Culteranismo and Góngora, whom he satirized mercilessly. As an example of his power to ridicule, read the sonnet "A una nariz" (To a Nose) and as example of metaphysical love read the sonnet "Amor constante más alla de la muerte" (Constant Love Beyond Death), hailed by Damaso Alonso as the greatest sonnet in Spanish literature.
