Santa Teresa de Jesus represents the humanization of mysticism. In her greatest mystical work, she narrates the ascent of her soul through the seven chambers of the mystic castle to complete union with God. Her basic message is the extinction of self and submergence into the Divine Essence. Yet her style is conversational and full of native humor and pungency. Her many achievements are related in her Libro de las fundaciones and her inner life is revealed in her introspective autobiography, Libro de su vida.
