This collection of 420 songs, set to music and gloryfing the miracles performed by the Virgin Mary, was composed by a 13th century king, known as the Wise or the Sage, who was the greatest of all medieval patrons of letters, an encyclopedic scholar and a poet in his own right. Of great power and musicality, the songs were written in Galician, the literary language of the age. Alfonso the Wise also exercised great influence on the development of Castilian prose with works on the law, history and astronomy.
