Pseudonym of Gabriel Téllez, a Mercederian friar, Tirso de Molina created the first Don Juan drama in world literature. Tirso's hero, Don Juan Tenorio became the inpiration for Moliere, Mozart, Byron and Zorrilla, to cite only the most famous treatments of the theme. Don Juan Tenorio, in Tirso's version, is a titanic character whose reckless defiance of the moral code reaches a level of superhuman courage, which to some extent, redeems his libertinism.
