The myth of Cíbola and the Seven Cities of Gold was revived with the stories that Cabeza de Vaca and his companions told upon returning to New Spain and based on Indian accounts of cities filled with great riches. This myth would launch a series of expeditions in search of the mythical cities, the most famous of which was led by Vázquez Coronado. The testimonies of its participants, especially that of Pedro de Castañeda Nájera, show the process that began with a myth and ends in disillusionment. They did not find gold, but they were the first Europeans to admire the Grand Canyon.
