This Account… was the first document written in the Americas by a European. Ramón Pané, a Catalan friar of the order of St. Jerome, was asked by Columbus to describe the Taino culture he had found in the island of Hispaniola. This is a document of inestimable value for the study of the Caribbean during the time of the encounter between cultures. Lost for centuries until discovered and made public by the researcher José Juan Arrom, in a scholarly edition under his supervision.
